Reggio Calabria Airport (so called “Aeroporto dello Stretto”) is located along the coast overlooking the Strait of Messina, in the southern area of the city of Reggio, in the locality of Ravagnese and it is about 4 kilometers from the city center. Its potential catchment area is made up of the two cities of Reggio Calabria and Messina and their provincial territories, which cover an area with over 1.2 million inhabitants. The airport is spread over an area of about 144 ha, at an average altitude of 29 m above sea level, bordered on one side by the town of Ravagnese and, on the other one, by the Reggio Calabria - Melito di Porto Salvo railway line and the sea. From an infrastructural point of view, it presents:
- in the air-side area, two runways and three aprons for parking commercial and general aviation aircraft;
- on the land side, a passenger terminal and 3 parking areas for cars and public transport.
The airport can be reached both from the north (Tyrrhenian area) and from the south (Ionian area). The airport is connected by road through a beltway connecting the A2 Salerno - Reggio Calabria motorway and the S.S. 106 Ionic; the railway connection is guaranteed through the Reggio Calabria Airport station stop of the Reggio Calabria - Melito di Porto Salvo line, thanks to an exclusive shuttle service on request, free for passengers who have to board. In addition, the airport is served by several urban lines from the municipal company and by dedicated and direct lines from the port of Reggio Calabria via the beltway, coinciding with the arrival of hydrofoils and ships from Sicily, to ensure the transfer of users from Messina.
The airport area is defined by the airport property delimitation report. Flight infrastructures and State Bodies have been excluded from the definition of the SEZ.
The area size included in the perimeter of the SEZ area corresponds to about 27 ha.
